There are quite alot of chemical structure and mechanism drawing tools out there, but I would prefer using the online sketcher provided by ChemDoodle, due to the fact that it's completely online-based, and is quite handy and easy to use. Did I mention that it's completely free? Open the editor tool by going to https://web.chemdoodle.com/demos/sketcher/. Here'...

I really love the sentiments of this meta post and bow down to how nice people on chem.SE — at least in comparison to other science SEs — are. I myself might be the culprit of some of the snarky comments. I don't want to justify them; I accept my mistake. I'm just saying there are other things here that make those snarky comments happen, rather ...

We are aware of this. The team is aware of this. There will be a solution. I have heard of that issue sometime last week, but found it not pressing enough to investigate, or make a fuzz about it. It hit SU the hardest with some 10k+ accounts. I know that the team is working on solutions. While this is certainly a nuisance, at the moment there is nothing ...

This was actually something we (the moderators) looked at a few months ago. Suffice it to say that we've tried everything that is reasonable to contact this guy, short of sending him a Howler by owl post. My personal opinion is that ~80% of his posts are salvageable. If you are not willing to put in the effort (and I don't mean that in a negative way - it ...

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. In this case, I personally don't see an urgent need to do anything. On your part, you just need to downvote and/or flag and/or vote to close, as with all low-quality questions. On our part, the duplicates will be subject to merging and probably also deletion, but that isn't a super urgent process. Mods are busy ...

I agree, that these comments may be seen as a bit overzealous. They suggest that this is a community driven by rules, which is definitely not the case. I think it's fine to link to the tour (check the informed badge first) and maybe the helpful maths pages. In cases of meh questions it would be nice to productively critique them. It is important to ...

How does the community view my actions in this regard? Should I continue doing this? As you have brought up at the end of your answer, you are well within your rights to do this. However, consider that most people have the answers sorted by votes within the UI, such that if everyone did this, the "bad" answers would bubble up to the top. This is not ...

"We need more members" Personally, I'm not sure this is necessarily true. What we need is good quality questions and good quality answers to accompany them. StackExchange generally has quite a high attrition rate— people come here looking for an answer to a specific question they have, no matter how ‘nice’ or ‘friendly’ we are towards them, there is ...

What you are describing is essentially what the "First Post" review queue is there for. It's not a bot that reviews the posts, but users who have been part of the community for some time (500 reputation). This review should of course be substantial, but the majority of regular reviewers use the "No action needed" very often. In many cases the question has ...

Hey it's no fair that two mods wrote an answer to this question but no mortal user did so I decided to answer and what I was about to say is that it's hard to deal with such users, if not impossible I won't cheat like Mart and type all the wall of text myself so you format I feel so evil. The worst. part of Li Zhi is sometimes they add punctuation marks to ...

Instead of making this about Li Zhi, how about we adapt a meta-policy. If anyone posts an answer that is a wall of text then we down vote [once] and add a comment Didn't read. This wall of text is impossible to comprehend. Please use better formatting. Then other users can upvote the comment rather than bang the answer. Then just let this go...

As the person who got the second comment, I will say that I felt as if I had done something wrong due to the fact that when you see other questions, they have specific answers and not welcome messages. Personally, I think that having no comment is better than a welcome comment that can definitely be read with a negative connotation.

6

I’m going to focus mainly on the two points you raised at the bottom of your post so that I can actually add to Martin’s post. I believe that if the first post was well-written, the welcoming comment should also point that out. I try to do that if I do welcoming posts, namely by saying something along the lines of Hi and welcome to Chemistry Stack ...

The "new contributor" indicator was first announced on August 2018 on Meta Stack Exchange: Come Take a Look at our New Contributor Indicator!: tl;dr;: Folks will see an indicator when they go to interact with new contributors (visible for a week following their first post) letting them know that the person is new. A handy link to our Code of ...

I mentally kept coming back to this, and I finally figured out why: in American English (my flavor of it, at least), dump is often used as a nominalized form of the verb dump out; that is, it refers to the pile of stuff formed after one dumps a thing out. So, if I were to refer to something as a 'HW dump', this is the sense I would mean, not that of a ...

I must say I have to agree with your comments on downvoting. Posting a single question and receiving 7 downvotes in half an hour is bad, and the issue is that I want to improve. People are free to criticise my posts and such, feel free to leave a downvote, I always want feedback, however I feel a lot of users are too quick to downvote, but not to actually ...

Provide an easy to find cheat-sheet-like guide for the common formatting types. Right now it isn't obvious where the chemical formatting specification is located. Ideally, it should be prominently linked from the "help" links on the edit answer/comment block. (Is mathjax available on comments? The help page makes it sound like it isn't ...) The fact that ...
